Consider, for example, the school superintendent in the financially struggling city of Troy, New York, who is getting a $250,000 contract buyout. His final year salary was just under $200,000, and the rest of his severance will consist of accumulated unused sick leave and vacation pay. On top of that, he and his family will get continuing health insurance coverage. He'll reportedly ride that golden parachute to a new job in Georgia.
Governor Andrew Cuomo, like Governor Chris Christie in New Jersey, has proposed capping school superintendents' salaries at $125,000 to $175,000, depending on district size. That proposal isn't likely to be enacted, however.
