California polls show some reason for hope

As a nattering nabob, I've assumed that Prop. 30 -- the massive sales- and income-tax hike that is the foundation of Gov. Jerry Brown's "recovery" plan -- would win and Prop. 32 -- a paycheck protection measure to stop unions from using automatic payroll deductions for political dues -- would lose. But a new Reason-Rupe Foundation poll shows that both races are too close to call, with 30 slightly ahead and 32 slightly behind. Usually, tax increases here lose on Election Day unless they are far ahead. And after hard-hitting and deceptive union ads (are there any other kind?) targeting supposed loopholes in 32, I figured it was a goner. But it is within spitting distance. The problem with 30 is not just that it will raise taxes but that it will feed the beast -- i.e., provide enough money to sustain the current union-dominated Legislature in its current ways at least for a few more months. Prop. 32 is a longshot but worthy effort.
