The showdown between Mayor Bloomberg and the UFT is heating up. At stake is $250 million
in state education funding, which the city cannot receive unless it
develops a more sophisticated method of evaluating its teachers. The Mayor's remarks on his radio show, comparing the UFT to the NRA, have sparked outrage. He suggested that the actions of the UFT leadership did not reflect the preferences of rank-and-file teachers. While this is common line of criticism of unions, there is a good deal of evidence (see Terry Moe's book on teachers unions) that at the local level, and especially on job protection issues, teachers strongly support the positions taken by their union representatives.
Also getting children to school may be more difficult, as the school bus drivers are threatening to strike over efforts to introduce competition in school busing.
